MTU and AFTA Partner on Global Business and Pilot Studies

19 September, 2022
The Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Global Business and Pilot Studies is a blended approach to becoming a professional pilot offering students the ability to gain a frozen Airline Transport Pilot License (fATPL) alongside an honours degree.
The programme, the first of its kind in Europe, has been developed by MTU and Atlantic Flight Training Academy (AFTA), with input from airline industry partners. It is designed to create well-rounded, commercially aware pilots with academic qualifications, providing improved career opportunities in the aviation industry.
Participants in this four-year programme will spend their first year studying on campus at MTU. During years two and three they will commence Commercial Pilot training at AFTA, one of Europe’s premier flight schools, entailing 220 hours of flight time at Cork International Airport and Waterford Airport. During year four, students will complete their studies online with MTU while working as commercial pilots.
Captain Mark Casey, AFTA's chief executive and head of training, said: “The MTU curriculum is carefully tailored to the areas identified through feedback from airline industry leaders and the pilot body. This global gold standard degree will cater for and enhance the industry pilot entry standard. I look forward to seeing AFTA and MTU develop the industry leaders of the future”.
According to MTU President Professor Maggie Cusack, this new programme has the dual benefit of enabling prospective pilots to solidify their career prospects whilst strengthening the links between MTU and the European aviation sector.
“MTU plays a central role in driving the development of a skilled workforce for many industries and this landmark offering for new pilots will see that role solidified for the aviation sector. The facilities and reputation of AFTA are industry-leading, and MTU is proud to have collaborated with such an established and well-regarded partner.”
