Work Placement

13 September, 2022
In the School of Business, Work Placement plays a vital role in the education, professional and personal development of our graduates.
Work Placement is integrated into all programmes at undergraduate level and in an increasing number of postgraduate programmes. Each year an average of 450 students from across 11 programmes undertake a minimum of 15 weeks of placement with organisations located in Cork, the wider Munster region, nationally and internationally.
The general disciplines covered include Marketing, Accounting, Information Systems, Business Administration, Business Management, Agriculture and Horticulture. Host companies range from small, to medium to large and comprise private as well as public sector organisations with Dell, VMWare, PwC, Lidl, Cork County Council and the Irish Guide Dogs featuring on the long list and playing a vital role in our business student’s education.
The MTU School of Business Placement team is perfectly positioned to develop and enhance industry engagement and has a deep understanding of the requirements of both internal and external stakeholders. We are seeing an increased number of students securing graduate positions as a direct result of placement and an increase in demand for our students with the growth and expansion of businesses in the Munster region.
Work Placement benefits both the student and the host organisation; students benefit from exposure to real-world, practical experience and getting the chance to put theory into practice, preparing them for the workplace in general and improving career prospects in the long term. All MTU students have a dedicated academic supervisor and receive a grade for their placement.
Host organisations have the opportunity to select and develop future talent, with companies now offering summer placement to 2nd-year students from some of our programmes. Students can inject new ideas and perspectives into the workplace and act as additional resources to undertake specific projects. Furthermore, collaboration on placement can lead to other engagement opportunities with MTU including Live Case studies such as Cork Airport, DePuy Synthes, Ballymaloe and Wisetek.
