MTU and Johnson & Johnson Celebrate a Decade of STEM Scholarships

09 May, 2022

MTU Johnson & Johnson scholarship recipients, past and present, joined MTU and Johnson & Johnson representatives at the DePuy Synthes site in Ringaskiddy to mark ten years of STEM Scholarships on Friday, 29th of April.

Since the scholarship programme began in 2012, Johnson & Johnson has supported over 20 MTU students through their education and early career pathways.

This type of partnership programme helps to bridge the gap between academia and industry, and speakers at the event included those instrumental in the development and delivery of the programme, and those who have benefited from it.

Johnson & Johnson awards three scholarships annually to MTU students studying Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. In addition to annual funding, scholarship students can engage in internships and work placements, gaining access to invaluable learning opportunities while building a support network of mentors and contacts.

Combining the support of MTU lecturers with the guidance of Johnson & Johnson mentors has enabled MTU students to transition successfully to the workplace and hit the ground running.

The programme has also developed a high-value talent pipeline for Johnson & Johnson, with over 80% of scholarship recipients continuing their careers with the organisation after graduation.

Speaking at the event, Professor Maggie Cusack, President of Munster Technological University, said MTU’s relationship with Johnson & Johnson brings enormous value to students. “These scholarship programmes help to harness the enthusiasm our students have for STEM subjects. The longevity of the relationship is a testament to the work that goes into it every year.”
