21 April, 2022
The Prize for Innovation Award Ceremony & Showcase took place on Friday, 4th March, as part of MTU Innovation & Enterprise Month.
The annual competition is open to students from all course backgrounds and boasts cash prizes worth €14000, thanks to generous sponsorship from South Cork LEO, Cork City LEO, North & West Cork LEO and Kerry LEO! Prizes are awarded for inventions and business ideas judged the most creative, innovative and likely to succeed in the marketplace. Watch presentations by some of the finalists here.
This year the top prize of MTU Entrepreneur of the Year went to the TULIPA team, seeking to increase cervical cancer detection rates by making the examination process more comfortable for practitioners and patients. The transdisciplinary TULIPA team features third-year mechanical and biomedical engineering students and business students.
TULIPA is one of nine Innovative Product Development (IPD) groups from the Department of Mechanical, Biomedical and Manufacturing Engineering who have been shortlisted in the top 50 for this years Enterprise Ireland Student Entrepreneur Awards.
It's a remarkable achievement for both students and staff to see MTU representing almost 20% of the national entrepreneurial talent at university undergraduate and postgraduate level and a true reflection of the innovation culture and ecosystem within the University. We wish all the groups the best of luck as they submit their business plans for a place in the top 10.
