Myles Murray, CEO of PMD Solutions, was the overall winner of the Irish Times Innovation of the Year Award for his respiratory monitoring device, RespiraSense.

RespiraSense also won the Life Sciences and Healthcare Category at the 2022 Irish Times Innovation Awards, held at the Museum of Literature Ireland, on March 31, 2022.

RespiraSense can detect changes in a patient’s breathing before it becomes a problem and transmits information through Bluetooth, allowing for minimal contact with patients.

It sits on the side of the patient’s chest, where the ribcage crowns and directly measures the movements of the patient’s chest and belly.

This innovative technology accelerated progress for the company during the pandemic as it allowed careful monitoring of COVID-19 patients without the need for additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

The idea for RespiraSense began when Myles was studying mechanical engineering at CIT in 2009. While on work placement, Myles was in contact with an emergency consultant and discovered that there was no reliable way to monitor patients presenting with unstable respiratory rates.

Myles began working on the RespiraSense technology as part of his final-year college project, winning CIT’s Prize for Innovation in 2011 and earning him a place on Enterprise Ireland’s Genesis Programme (now New Frontiers) at the Rubicon Centre, after graduation.

The support provided by the Genesis programme led to the founding of PMD Solutions enabling Myles to develop an investment level business plan and secure funding for product development and innovation.

PMD is currently working with the European Space Agency to put a sim card into the device, enabling use in community settings without connectivity issues. PMD hope to launch the latest iteration of RespiraSense later this year.
