CAPPA Receives €300,000 Worth of Funding for New Equipment

15 July, 2021

MTU’s Centre for Advanced Photonics and Analysis has received over €300,000 in funding for new equipment as part of the Enterprise Ireland Capital Equipment Fund.

The funding, announced by Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar on the 14th of July, sees over €6m being awarded to 29 projects across the third level sector through the Technology Gateway and Technology Centre Programmes.

As one of two Enterprise Ireland Technology Gateways at MTU, CAPPA is at the forefront of photonics research in Ireland delivering innovative expertise and solutions for Irish industry, with supports from Enterprise Ireland.

The funding will facilitate the acquisition of two new pieces of equipment: a benchtop Deep Ultraviolet Raman (DUV) Raman and fluorescence spectrograph and a benchtop nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer, expanding CAPPA’s existing service and increasing industrial engagement with companies in the agricultural, pharmaceutical, medical device and diagnostics, healthcare, photonics, and food and beverage sectors.

The NMR spectrometer will provide additional capability in the areas of contaminant analysis, raw material purity and identification of unknown materials for a range of sectors including medical devices, pharmaceuticals and food and beverage. The DUV Raman and fluorescence spectrograph will support SMEs in the bio-pharmaceutical industry enabling cheaper production, faster development, and improved quality of biologics to gain a competitive edge in a global market.

The new equipment will extend fundamental research on which future applied and industrially led projects will be built allowing CAPPA to retain current industry partners as well as growing larger projects with new and existing partners.
