08 October, 2020

MTU has been allocated €8.25m under the Transformation Funding for Technological Universities (TUTF).

The funding announced by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris T.D, is part of an overall €34.33m being allocated under the 2020 Higher Education Authority (HEA) call to assist the development and progression of technological universities.

Minister Harris said, “The unparalleled Government investment of €34.33 million this year and €90 million over the lifetime of the fund, will establish TUs across all regions capable of delivering national strategic objectives in accordance with the TURN report vision.”

On 1st January 2021, Cork Institute of Technology will join with Institute of Technology Tralee to establish Munster Technological University.

Jointly welcoming the announcement, President of CIT Dr Barry O’Connor and President of IT Tralee Dr Brendan O’Donnell said, “The allocation of €8.25m which represents the highest allocation in the sector, strengthens our capability to play a leadership role in the strategic development of the South West region”.

It is envisaged that MTU will be a key player in attracting foreign direct investment and in driving and supporting regional development. MTU will continue to build on existing close relationships with enterprise and community groups, having at its core a purposeful approach to engagement with local, regional, national and international partners.

The new university will cater for 18,000 students spread across five campuses at CIT Bishopstown, IT Tralee, CIT School of Music, CIT Crawford College of Art and Design and the National Maritime College of Ireland in Ringaskiddy. MTU will become the first technological university in Munster, the second university in Cork, and the first university in Kerry.
