CIT’s Nimbus Research Centre will lead a new EU funded research project to deliver energy-efficiency in the manufacturing sector.

Dr Susan Rea and Dr Alan McGibney will head up the DENiM project worth over €11 million from the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 Technologies for Factories of the Future programme.

This four-year initiative will address the need for energy-efficient manufacturing system management and includes a consortium of 18 partner organisations across eight countries. It is the first Ireland-led project funded under the Factories of the Future programme.

Using the internet of things, data analytics, digital twins, energy modelling and automation the DENiM project’s goal is to gather, analyse and communicate data in real-time that can optimise performance and reduce energy consumption at machine, process and factory levels.

Dr McGibney said, “Digital technologies will play a significant role by providing the ability to automatically monitor and optimise energy usage, while also informing users on the environmental and economic impact of decisions made at all stages of the manufacturing process”.

The project will take a holistic approach to energy efficient manufacturing systems management and consider the interactions between the business, technology, infrastructure and the workforce. 

Dr Rea added that, “The DENiM project views education, awareness and upskilling as an essential component to allow all workers understand their collective responsibility in addressing energy efficiency”.
