CIT and IT Tralee to Become Munster Technological University

On Tuesday, May 26th 2020, An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar T.D. announced the creation of the Munster Technological University which will see the merger of Cork Institute of Technology and Institute of Technology Tralee.                                       

Munster Technological University will come into effect on January 1st, 2021, after a draft ministerial order has been approved by both the Dáil and Seanad which will also see the dissolution of both Cork IT and IT Tralee.

Mr Varadkar stated, “The Government has a very clear ambition to expand and consolidate higher education facilities, to boost economic development across the country and to attract research funding. Technological universities are central to delivering on this. The establishment of the Munster Technological University will stimulate a more balanced growth of population and employment across Ireland".

Mr Michael Loftus, Vice President for External Affairs at CIT said there has been a "hugely positive response from industry following the Government’s decision to establish the Muster Technological University".

It is envisaged that MTU will be a key player in attracting foreign direct investment and in driving and supporting regional development. MTU will continue to build on existing close relationships with enterprise and community groups, having at its core a purposeful approach to engagement with local, regional, national and international partners. 

Michael Loftus, Vice President for External Affairs said there has been a ‘’hugely positive response from industry following the Government’s decision to establish the Muster Technological University.’’

The new university will cater for 18,000 students spread across five campuses at CIT Bishopstown, IT Tralee, CIT School of Music, CIT Crawford College of Art and Design and the National Maritime College of Ireland in Ringaskiddy. The MTU will become the first technological university in Munster, the second university in Cork, and the first university in Kerry. 

As well as having a positive effect on the local economy, studying at MTU will have many benefits for students, including the following: 

1. The range and quality of services and supports available to students will be enriched; 

2. Students will have a greater range of options available to them in relation to course choice, progression opportunities, research and industry placement.

3. Graduates will be able to avail of a greater selection of options nationally, and internationally, for further study and participation in research.

4. Graduates will experience enhanced employability both in Ireland and internationally as MTU graduates.

If this hasn’t encouraged you to study at CIT, news was announced on Monday, June 22nd of the €22m sports complex to be built on the Bishopstown campus. The project will be delivered in two phases; firstly, the sports arena, followed by athletics facilities. Clearance of the site has already begun with an anticipated opening date of September 2021 for the arena and September 2022 for the athletics facilities.
