CIMA Learning Event for Accounting and Information System Students
28 April, 2020
CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) partnered with Cork Institute of Technology, welcoming over 70 1st and 4th year CIT Accounting and Information System students to a learning event in November 2019.
The CIMA event which was held in conjunction with CIT’s Department of Accounting and Information Systems was hosted by Karen O’Malley, Business Relationship Manager from CIMA. The afternoon event began with a presentation from Ms O’Malley giving students an overview of CIMA in the context of the changing world of accounting and finance.
This was followed by a business game challenge based on a fictitious footwear company case study, taken from a previous top-level CIMA examination. Students broke into groups and were asked to come up with recommendations for the company and to present their findings.
Despite stiff competition, 4th-year student, Mairead Clifford demonstrated strong competencies and was deemed the overall winner on the day, as judged by Adrian Cronin and Kodzo Selormey, both CIMA members from Ervia and Apple, respectively.
The action-orientated event aimed to give the students an appreciation of the practicalities of the CIMA qualification and to demonstrate many of the core CIMA skills, such as working as part of a team, communication skills, presentation skills, initiative-taking, leadership, time management, listening skills, data analysis, decision making, strategic planning, influencing and creativity. Ms O’Malley said, “The event was a great success and we look forward to holding it annually and extending it to other years and classes”.
CIT Lecturer in Accounting & Information Systems Ruth Vance Lee said CIT is delighted to work with CIMA on initiatives like this. “Not only do our students get access to real life business cases but they also get a flavour of what an accounting qualification and the subsequent job of an accountant can entail. We look forward to doing many more collaborations with CIMA going forward, albeit maybe online", she added.
