In the Navy! CIT Culinary Arts Students Pay a Site Visit to Haulbowline

03 February, 2020

CIT Culinary Arts students took to the waves in December 2019, in the company of the Naval Services. CIT Culinary lecturers and students were invited to Haulbowline, the main naval base and headquarters for the Irish Naval Service. Here they met with CIT Culinary Arts Apprentices from the Navy in their workplace.

These students are sponsored through the Chef de Partie Apprenticeship Programme in CIT. The visiting party were treated to a tour of the base kitchens on board the LE Niamh, which is operated by 44 crew including six officers.

Students learned about life at sea, how to source and store fresh food on board the LE Niamh, as well as budgeting and the skills required to cook on a naval vessel. This site visits gave students a sense of what it’s like living and working on board a ship, and a great insight into an alternative side of the industry.

The Chef de Partie Apprenticeship is an ‘earn and learn’ degree programme that combines on-the-job training with academic study in CIT. The four year programme allows students to work and earn while getting to achieve a qualification and offers participants career progression from Chef de Partie to Sous Chef and Head Chef.
