Marketing Students Plan Future Strategy for Cork Storage Company
11 December, 2018
Wm. O’Brien Self Storage partnered with CIT’s 4th Year Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Marketing students for their Marketing Strategy Assignment.
Lecturer Holly Barry set the brief for students after consulting with Vincent Bartley, manager of William O'Brien Self Storage.
The objective set by the company was to drive brand awareness and brand penetration for both commercial and domestic markets. Wm. O’Brien Self Storage wanted a creative, interactive and engaging future proof marketing strategy to realise their vision of becoming Ireland’s leading self-storage company.
Mr Bartley and the company’s owner, William O’Brien, visited CIT at the beginning of October to meet with students and share their vision of where they wanted the company to go in the future.
Working in groups, students visited the company premises, walked around the various storage units, taking photos, videos, notes and asking lots of questions. With 50% of the Module’s grade riding on the assignment, students were focused and driven.
Ms Barry kept the company updated on the students' progress and whittled down the campaigns to the best five, which the students then pitched to the company in a showcase event at the Bishopstown Campus.
Mr Bartley said he and his colleagues were blown away by the experience, “The standard from everyone was incredible. Every group presented their project with such confidence and passion, they each brought many gems of ideas”.
He said the winning presentation fitted exactly with the company’s thoughts and vision for the future. “Their team work, business application, trends, statistics, objectives and projections were so spot on and displayed to us exactly how we as a company should be thinking as we look to the future”, he added.
Ms Barry said they were delighted to have been given the opportunity to work with such a successful Cork business. “For both the Marketing Strategy students and me, it was such an enjoyable experience and offered us a great insight into the self-storage industry."
She said the strategic marketing campaigns created by the students for Wm. O'Brien were extremely creative yet adaptable to the company, “Overall, this was a very successful live assignment all round”.
