Movements and Skill Acquisition Ireland: Constraints Based Coaching and Ecological Dynamics to Enhance Sports Performance Conference

04 May, 2018

The Department of Sport, Leisure and Childhood Studies held a conference, April 6th and 7th in Cork Institute of Technology. The theme of the event was “Movement and Skill Acquisition Ireland: Constraints Based Coaching and Ecological Dynamics to Enhance Sports Performance”.

The attendees (who included, athletes, coaches, students of sport science, coaching science, and physical education, as well as, sports medics, sports administrators and strength and conditioning practitioners) heard from some of the world’s leading practitioners about how to create better practice environments for athletes and teams through constraint-led approaches. The keynote speakers included Professor Keith Davis (Professor of Motor Learning at the Centre for Sports Engineering Research), Richard Shuttleworth (High Performance Coaching Consultant), and Dr Zoe Wimshurst (Director of Performance Vision). Over 120 delegates travelled from all over Ireland and from the UK, Sweden, Finland, Spain, Australia and New Zealand.

Dr Edward Coughlan, a Lecturer in the Department of Sport, Leisure and Childhood Studies commented that “From the very outset of the concept for the event it received incredible support; none more so than from our Head of Department, Dr Cian O’Neill, whose encouragement and goodwill never wavered even as the size of the event grew. Everything about the event is a tribute to the campus-wide support experienced along the way. For instance, the conference logo was designed by Ryan Browne, a fourth year student on the Visual Communications course and the video content was coordinated by Paul Dempsey, a student on the Public Relations with New Media MA, both in the Media Communications Department”.
