Industry Collaboration in the Structural and Civil Engineering Degrees

02 April, 2018

This year an exciting new initiative to support third level education of civil and structural engineers has been launched by the cement and concrete industries. A collaboration with six third level institutions including Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and the cross-industry Concrete Development Group developed lecture content for students studying civil and structural engineering in Irish third level institutions. The focus is on concrete technology, which is a key area of study for the students of civil and structural engineering in CIT.

Brian O Rourke, a lecturer in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering in CIT, one of the country’s leading academics in the area of concrete technology, contributed to the development of the lecture content along with academics from Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, Dublin Institute of Technology, NUI Galway and Athlone Institute of Technology.

The pilot group of students to have benefited from the initiative nationally are this year’s second year of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Structural Engineering. To mark the occasion Richard Bradley, Technical Manager, Irish Cement Ltd. and Liam Smyth, Sustainability & Marketing Manager, Irish Concrete Federation recently visited the Department to meet the students.

It is envisaged that the lecture content will be rolled out to all second year structural, civil and environmental engineering students in the Department from the next academic year.
