Professional Retail Bakery Awards Ceremony

Professional Retail Bakery Awards Ceremony

25 October, 2017

The Department of Tourism & Hospitality at Cork Institute of Technology held an awards ceremony in October for eleven candidates who participated in the inaugural Professional Retail Bakery module.

This module was designed in response to a demand from Musgraves for those working in the retail industry and it constitutes 10 credits at Level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). The module helps to develop the students’ baking skills and techniques and builds on their existing knowledge in the area. This is turn results in increased productivity in the workplace. Employees from Musgraves also have the opportunity to complete a module in Delicatessen Food Service (10 credits), while those who complete both modules and achieve twenty credits will receive a Certificate in Retail Food Operations.

Such a qualification is of great benefit to both the business and to the student’s own professional development. Attendees at the awards ceremony included Ms Anne Rigney, and Ms Orla Farrell from the Human Resources Department of Musgraves and the audience were addressed by Dr Noel Murray, Head of Department of Tourism & Hospitality, Mr Gerard O’ Donovan, Head of Faculty Business & Humanities and Dr Barry O Connor, President of CIT.

Dr Noel Murray commented “we are delighted to present the inaugural awards in Professional Retail Bakery. This module was developed in cooperation with Musgraves in order to enhance the skills of employees in their stores and provide them an opportunity to add to their formal professional development. We look forward to the candidates completing the next module on Delicatessen Food Service and achieving their Certificate in Retail Food Operations. This is another example of the many ways in which CIT and my Department are collaborating with our industry partners to meet their changing needs.”
