Most major industries are beginning to look at big data and how it can be analysed as a key to unlocking greater business success. Now that we are able to glean data from multiple data sources, structured and unstructured, there is a world of possibilities before us.

Data science and big data analytics are exciting new areas in both academia and industry. Bridging this gap and harnessing the best of both fields, the initial cohort of students of CIT’s Higher Diploma in Data Science & Analytics programme engaged in real-life industrial projects. These students worked with a variety of industries including Trend Micro & Central Applications Office to develop ways for the chosen companies to use big data to solve problems they are faced with.

This 1 year postgraduate diploma was created with the needs of industry in mind and was funded by the ICT Skills Initiative. On completion of the diploma, the first cohort of student to complete this bespoke, presented their projects to industry at a seminar entitled “Big data analytics Cork – Reason, Rigour, Fin Barre and Bool” that saw representation from three bodies of the Cork region who are actively engaged in cutting edge research in business intelligence and data analytics - IBM, Xanadu Consulting and The Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF).

For the next academic year September 2014 – June 2015 CIT’s Department of Mathematics will be enrolling a new class of students in the Higher Diploma in Data Science & Analytics programme. Twenty funded places are available under the ICT Skills 2014 initiative. Further information on the programme and application procedure is accessible here
